I’m Still Here Folks…

Sometimes writers bury themselves into caves or dark rooms or a yurt and write. Sometimes writers forget (as much as possible) about publishing and awards and credits that weigh down our names. We return to the basics: a cup of coffee, a pen, paper. If a writer is lucky (or patient) the muse might channel herself through one’s body into letters onto pages that howl at the glowing moon. Sometimes. This can happen in a yurt surrounded by trees (big and tall) and weeds (unruly and wicked) and chickens (goofy) and slugs (gooey) and a winery (across the road) and, yes… the odd cougar (check the paper, I kid you not). Sometimes writers bury themselves in such places to write detective novels that feature a protagonist named Sal who is thirty and works at a bookstore called The Armchair Detective. Sometimes, the world becomes a mystery and we write.

Brockton Writers Series: Come Hear Me Read — in church!

I will be reading on Tuesday, October 5th as part of the Brockton Writers Series’ first year anniversary. The reading takes place from 7-9 pm (following the writers networking session at 6:30 pm), at the historic St. Anne’s Church, 270 Gladstone, just north of Dundas in Toronto. The night will also feature readings and performances by Vivek Shraya, Michael Erickson, Fraser Sutherland and Hema Vyas. And, as I understand, we will all be reading in the actual church!

I will be tabling my wares “A Theory of Darkness” along with “The Burden of a Song” (my chapbooks) in addition to other booty this Saturday, July 31 at the Parkdale Bazaar from 11-5pm. The fair is located at the Parkdale Town Square along Cowan Ave. at Queen St. West. The event is a vintage and handmade market, and promises to be a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Unkindness Press to Launch my Chapbook at Small Press Fair

On Saturday June 19, The Unkindness of Raven’s Press will launch a chapbook of my poems called A Theory of Darkness. These poems are part of a larger cross-genre mystery-novel-in-progress also called A Theory of Darkness. The project explores (and subverts) commonplace beliefs about the nature of time, identity, and fantasy.

Poetry Chapbook designed by Ian Sullivan Cant. Each cover is inked with a hand-crafted stamp.

The poems in this collection concern themselves with time-related matters that have long preoccupied me: fragments, ruins, history, storytelling, memories, mysteries, loss, change… I hope the ideas will captivate you as much as they have me.

Please come out and support my friend Ian Sullivan Cant and me. Find our work at The Unkindness of Raven’s Press table on Saturday, June 19 from 11 am to 5pm at The Great Hall, 1087 Queen St. W. (close to the Gladstone).

don’t let the lights go out, an online library of unrealized art projects, is the first web project from my friend Ian Sullivan Cant’s unkindness press of ravens press.

Every creative person has all sorts of projects hidden inside their brains. Brilliant ideas grow like weeds, but most are never realized. don’t let the lights go out is a place to share those ideas.

This project is looking for your participation. If you have a concept for a project that you’ll never get to doing, but you still love, just write it down or sketch it out and send it in to unkindness.press@gmail.com.
